Sony and Microsoft to be sued over Controller Rumble Appropriation
Immersion Corp has filed a joint lawsuit against both SCEE and Microsoft’s Xbox division over the use of rumble force-feedback in the controllers of the PSone, PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

Immersion claims that the three console’s rumble features are in breach of two sensory feedback patents owned by Immersion Corp that have been used for some time in automotive engineering and medical applications. The claimant company argues that the technologies employed by the gaming duo for on-screen feedback are an unlawful use of its design.

Immersion Corp says that it has been in discussions with the two for “a few quarters,” with no agreement being made.

On this point, you may remember that in our interview with Nintendo’s Mr Iwata last summer, he stated that Nintendo innovated rumble technology, only to have it copied by Sony. He said that this was the reason for such secrecy around Mario Sunshine for GameCube.

If this is the case, surely Immersion should make Nintendo its prime target?

More as we get it.
