It's tin foil hat time! The latest rumour to be slung across the internet is the supposition that Sony will formally announce the PlayStation 4 in just over a month's time. This is based on the fact that Sony has a press event planned for February 25th that will focus on its current-gen PlayStation 3 and PS Vita platforms. If you're confused, don't worry. We are as well. According to a report by
Expert Reviews, the upcoming Destination PlayStation event will "focus on the games being released for Sony's current-generation PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita consoles," but apparently "the company is thought to be teasing the PlayStation 4 at the event to build interest ahead of a 2014 launch date."
The idea is that Sony wants to get the jump on Microsoft, which is expected to announce and release its next Xbox console this year. While this may be true - Sony representatives have previously said on the record that the company does not want to give its rival another headstart - it doesn't necessarily mean that it will use an event primarily intended for PS3 and Vita software to do that.
Expert Reviews adds that "Sony, for its part, has refused to comment on the claimed specifications." Obviously.
It all sounds a little bit like someone is putting high hopes on an early announcement, based on absolutely nothing from either Sony or developers. But sometimes it's good to feel optimistic about these things. As always, keep that vat of salt ready, in case you're willing to ride the hype train.
