Nintendo Defends Wii U Day One Patch Following Launch Criticism
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has responded to criticism of the Wii U's launch, which saw users download a Day One Network Update to gain access to online features such as the eShop and Miiverse.

"Nintendo developers want to make sure that the very best product is available to consumers," Reggie said. "That creates a dynamic where our developers are working on elements until the very last point possible. That's why the system update was required on Day One - and this is quite similar to what's happened with other consumer electronic products."

While it doesn't amount to much of a pain for those living in the 21st Century, it could be a pain for those with a slow WiFi connection. Will we start seeing the Network Update included into the system soon, negating the need to update? Don't count on it - Fils-Aime said that the company will wait a few months before bundling the features in with the console firmware.

The executive was also bullish in the face of the reaction to Wii U launch software, which has been claimed does not necessarily inspire as much as past Nintendo console launches. "There has been a range of comments and commentary," he said. "But when I go on Miiverse and see how consumers are reacting to games like ZombiU or … Call of Duty, that tells me we're doing something very, very positive.

"Similarly, when I go on other consumer social networks and see other consumer reaction that is positive, I know we've done well."
