UPDATE: The Scottish Government has contacted SPOnG to clarify that the report was published by two quangoes, Creative Scotland and Scottish Enterprise, not by the government itself. Original story follows.Whoops! The Scottish government found itself in an embarrassing position this morning, as it published a report that suggests that its domestic games industry is quite literally worthless. The report, conducted by DC Research and commissioned by government body Creative Scotland and Scottish Enterprise, was an attempt to highlight sixteen industries that contributes to the country's creative sector. It was published in June using publicly available statistics from 2010.
The "Computer Games" industry is listed as containing a mere 200 employees, with a gross value add of £0. Accounting for rounding, of course. According to the findings, there aren't any students studying game-related subjects either.
The snub has caused publications to brandish the report as "inaccurate". The report admits that many companies have been omitted due to, apparently, different industry categorisations. Perhaps most damning is the clear omission of Rockstar North, a studio that employs more than 200 staff alone. If we remember correctly,
Grand Theft Auto is a pretty successful game series.
