The PlayStation Vita is not performing as well as Sony would like. That hypothesis is supported by the fact that the company's touch-capable handheld has been colossally outsold in its first 35 weeks on sale in Japan by its predecessor, the PSP.
According to figures by Media Create, compiled by SPOnG, the PSP sold 1,583,383 units in its first 35 weeks on sale. By comparison, the Vita only sold 873,186 units. Gulp. Things get bleaker when you stack both numbers up against Nintendo's - the DS sold 2,730,876 units and the 3DS sold 2,146,603 units in their first 35 weeks.
Sony is hoping that global sales of the Vita will pick up on the back of its recently announced Cross Buy initiative, which allows users to own a copy of a portable and console version of the same game for one price. In Japan though, perhaps the only thing that could bring the handheld back up to speed would be a heavy dose of Monster Hunter.
