Paramount Studios is very intimately involved with the development of the upcoming Star Trek video game, and senior vice president Brian Miller has told SPOnG that the company doesn’t want to “fall into the trap of a typical movie game”.
Digital Extremes is handling development of the third-person co-op space opera, centering on JJ Abrams’ rebooted Star Trek universe. Miller said that, with Paramount focused on ensuring a high level of quality, the pressure has been piled on the studio to realise its ambitious vision.
“It’s really important for us that we did this the right way,” Miller said at Gamescom. “Star Trek has been one of our biggest franchises for over 40 years - having to reboot it and get it up to speed with a new generation was a huge task. [Our involvement] clearly shows how importantly we treat our properties.
“[Digital Extremes] have embraced this in a big way, and this has been a big challenge for them,” he continued. “We wanted to do something different and we’ve been pushing them to the limits of what they can do. They’ve stepped up every time and really made us proud.”
Miller also spoke about the culture of movie studios and game tie-ins, noting that such projects fail due to lack of time given for development. “I do think that if we’re going to do it right, we really need to invest in it the right way... if more [studios] did that you’d see a quality spike upwards [for game tie-ins].”
Star Trek is set for release on Xbox, PlayStation 3 and PC in early 2013.
