Activision and Treyarch have realised that you can only take a war-based, killing and shooting IP so far if you are going to convince the "proper mainstream" (daily newpapers and news channels) that your "entertainment franchise" is more than a psycho-fest. So, Black Ops 2 is less war and more e-sports.We are already aware that nasty
Kill Streaks are to become lovely Score Streaks. It's also been made clear by Treyarch's game designer director David Vonderhaar that the new
CoD is going sporty.
"We have been crafting the very best multiplayer experience we have ever made, " he began in boringly predictable style as he spoke to
MCV.
He then drops the... well, no bomb, probably e-ball with, "We have been inspired by the world of eSports and have created tools to bring eSports to the masses. We have taken the competitive spirit of Call of Duty and we are elevating it to a spectator sport."
So, Activision (which has still not been bought) is leaving the "authentic war experience" gambit to EA and
Medal of Honor as it goes fully mainstream.
