Speaking at a shareholder meeting, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has said that the Wii U will not feature a paid subscription service. He did note that he is not against a paid service that could link the Wii U and other devices to a shared network in principal. He said, however, that in practice he feels this is not the best approach for users of Nintendo devices.
Iwata apparently feels that by giving everyone access to the Miiverse Nintendo can better enable word of mouth to spread and push hardware and software sales.
Iwata also said that Nintendo will announce its Japanese Wii U plans in Autumn. Mention of European or North American plans was not reported.
