Nintendo is clearly aiming its Wii U console at more than just the casual market. NoA's marketing executive Scott Moffitt has declared that the tablet-based GamePad controller could be the "preferred" way of playing games for the hardcore, Call of Duty player. At E3, Moffitt was asked whether the console would satisfy that particular core market, specifically mentioning
Call of Duty -
Black Ops II wasn't announced at Nintendo's press conference, but rumours are purporting that a Wii U version is in the works. "It's a simple answer: the Wii U is designed to appeal to everybody," Moffitt responds.
"Do we want to reach out to the core audience? Absolutely. They're very much part of our audience and the group of consumers we hope will find the way you can reimagine games on the Wii U. The Wii U could become the preferred way to play those games for some of the core gamers."
Speaking of
Call of Duty, Moffitt went into further detail. "You can imagine how a game like
Call of Duty would work on the Wii U--the GamePad will allow you to declutter the TV and pull gaming items like maps down and not interrupt your interaction and enjoy the cinematic quality of the game on the TV. That's one application that could be exciting and could enhance gameplay for a core gamer."
Seems like a new frontier for core franchises, but whether Nintendo will be able to break the spell that Microsoft seems to have over Activision in terms of
Call of Duty exclusivity? That's a tougher one to call.
