Encore has announced that it will be bringing a new Dragon’s Lair title to both PlayStation 2 and GameCube later this year.

The game is currently titled Dragon’s Lair 3D and will see the revival of Dirk, the daring, if control-system-hampered hero, battling loads of nasties in his quest to rescue the Princess Daphne.

"Dragon's Lair is a legendary franchise, and we believe that this new version will appeal to both classic gaming fans worldwide and a brand new generation of gamers," said Michael Bell, Chairman and CEO of Encore. "Dragon's Lair 3D will set the standard for 3D gameplay by offering state-of-the-art animation and character movement, while staying true to the design and storyline of the original arcade game."

The original game was released way back in 1983 and was a kind of interactive cartoon. The controls were simple: you had to perform certain joystick or button actions in sequence in order to prevent Dirk from being eaten/drowning/falling off a cliff, etc. The arcade version told you what to do, whereas the home versions, to extend replayability, made you learn from trial and error.

This new version will feature over 200 rooms to struggle through and a cast of new characters, all rendered in 3D. "We are delighted to partner with Encore, because they're as passionate about Dragon's Lair 3D as we are," added Rick Dyer, President and CEO of Dragon's Lair, Dragonstone Software and the game's original designer. "It is truly exciting to reinvent this arcade game - which fans have loved for so many years - as a revolutionary, three-dimensional world that people can play in their living rooms."
