E3 2012: Wii U Gets Xbox 360 Controller Screams Hardcore Games

Wii U will increase Nintendo's Social Networking too.

In order to enable its Tuesday main event - and its third-party partners - to major on software and maybe even games - Nintendo had a little clarification event prior to the main E3 event on Tuesday. President Saturo Iwata talked about the Wii U.

The presentation was a pre-recorded event - so no questions about price, release date and tech specs meant that there was no information on any of that either. Mr Iwata basically took half an hour to clear up the confusion from last year's E3 regarding the Wii U as a unit or a controller. It's two things.

The controller is touch-sensitive and can - as we saw last year - be used a separate device to interact with the games and services available by the Wii U main unit. It can also be used as a remote control for your television.

Yes, the Wii U is all about you having nothing else in the house but a big TV, a Wii U and the Wii U controller. That's not entirely true: the device will interact with the DS range, the Wii's Balance Board and other Wii controllers and... in time also with your mobile phone. This latter addition relates to the Social Networking aspect.

The MiiVerse (no need to explain that one) brings Wii Miis closer together with Twitter like messaging and other social networking features. You can see all this in the video we've linked to.

What we're all very excited about however, is not another closed social network (even with mobile phone access at some point in the future) but the Xbox 360 controller-a-like Wii U Pro Controller (see image in this story).

It screams 'HARDCORE GAMING'! very loudly indeed. We await Tuesday's software reveals with actual excitement!
