The fate of UK games retailer the Game Group - which also owns GameStation - has gone from "Oh God! Jesus! It's all over!! Sell! Sell! Sell!!" to "Mmmm, lots of people are preparing to buy it" in the last two weeks. Today, at least three major players are said to be showing an interest in the store chain.MCV has been covering the retail business end with some aplomb. It's reported that GameStop has shown an interest in the Group in the past. This is despite the USA-based retailer already having pulled its UK operation.
This afternoon, we're also made aware that
Comet owner OpCapita is sniffing around for a possible purchase. But that's not all, looming over the horizon like a veritable behemoth comes Walmart.
The
MCV report states that, "A Walmart acquisition would likely be better news for GAME’s staff than a takeover by either an investment fund or retail salvage specialist, as it would be more inclined to reform operations as opposed to stripping and rebuilding the company."
It also mentions that "retail strategist" Hilco and investment firm Blueshore Global Equity, which acquired an eight per cent stake in the chain have shown Game interest.
