What happened? Just a week ago, Minecraft creator Markus 'Notch' Persson was incredibly eager to get into bed with Tim Schafer over funding a Psychonauts sequel. Now the indie developer is putting on the brakes and making a U-turn, as he exclaims that the original offer he made on Twitter was made "semi-jokingly."Tim Schafer, for his part, seems to think that things are on the right track - he told
Kotaku that the costs of development would amount to some $13 million. A figure that reportedly didn't faze Persson in the slightest.
In his
blog, Persson paints a different picture. "The budget for doing a Psychonauts 2 is three times higher than my initial impression," he writes in an attempt to quell rising excitement over the project, adding that "Tim and I haven’t spoken much at all other than a couple of emails.
"I would not be investing in this as a charity. It would be because I think the game would be profitable," Persson claimed, noting interest from other parties. The success of Double Fine's Kickstarter crowd-sourcing investment project will also keep the studio "very busy for many months," it seems.
Ultimately, it's all our fault. "Stop hyping over this, internet! You’re going to scare me into doing things secretly instead of being open and transparent via twitter," Persson wrote on his personal blog. "I am incredibly scared of the very real risk of people feeling let down just because I took a chance at something that doesn’t end up panning out."
