Australian Games Industry Seeing "Exceptional Growth"
Australia is tipped to be a "driving force" behind the video game market's growth into the digital space this year, despite recent high profile studio closures in Melbourne and Brisbane.

That's according to Anthony Reed, the chief executive of the Games Development Association of Australia. He says that, even though there is apparent woe in the traditional games market, smaller local studios are picking up the slack and will lead the global industry in 2012.

"Global consumer confidence in the digital space is encouraging exceptional growth in the Australian game development industry," he said. "In 2011, Australian-made games featured highly across multiple digital platforms."

The comment comes amidst concern in the country's position within the global games industry. Recently, THQ shuttered two of its console-focused studios in Melbourne and Brisbane, while EA closed Visceral last year. The rise and crash of L.A. Noire creators Team Bondi has resulted in alarm in the health of the country's industry.

But referencing Halfbrick Studio's 120 million unit sales success with Fruit Ninja and IronMonkey's accolade as Apple's Game of the Year with Dead Space, Reed sees only positive things in Australia's future. "Into 2012, we will see many more innovative and creative properties made by Australian studios releasing to a global audience," he declared.
