Miyamoto Hunting for 'One Big Hit'
Nintendo has offered up further clarification on the ongoing role of Shigeru Miyamoto at the company. After the mad scrabble to clarify that the Mario and Zelda creator is not 'retiring', the company has put up an investor Q&A which quotes him as saying he's stepping away from the franchises in the search for "one big hit title."

“The ideal situation is one in which I do not need to give any direction. My giving directions may hold back my subordinates’ independent and voluntary growth,” Miyamoto said in the Q&A.

“Of course, I do not let everyone go totally unchecked. I supervise whenever necessary... I end up using less of my energy and, as a result, I am starting to have time that I can spend for myself.”

Expanding on just what he means by spending time "for myself", he went on: “Now, I am spending more time than before on finding new ideas for new developments rather than focusing my energy on work in my (development) teams in order to solidify the contents of (existing) franchise titles. After all, developing big hit titles must be the solution.

"I am acting with the understanding that one big hit title can change multiple phases of a situation in the entertainment business, and I feel that finding such one big hit is my basic job."

Commenting on Miyamoto's role in working with other developers, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said, “Mr Miyamoto’s intention is to change the developers’ mindset because they will continue to believe that ‘this is Mr Miyamoto’s responsibility, not ours' unless he encourages them to envision the workplace without him. Unfortunately, the article was reported as if Mr Miyamoto had made his retirement announcement.”

The article in question was one in which Miyamoto used the word 'retiring' quite a few times in relation to himself and which was subsequently taken by many to herald his departure from the front lines of development.

What he means is "the Mario and Link factory can continue without me now and I'm bored".

Just as long as we get another Pikmin and not another Steel Diver.
