Microsoft has released it first quarter results for the financial year 2012. Of course we're interested in how the Entertainment and Devices Division, which is responsible for the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live. But let's start with the overall situation:
"First-quarter revenue of $17.37 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2011, a 7% increase from the same period of the prior year.
"Operating income, net income, and diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $7.20 billion, $5.74 billion, and $0.68 per share, which represented increases of 1%, 6%, and 10%, respectively, when compared with the prior year period."
There we go.
Now, the Xbox:
According to Betanews, "Microsoft shipped 2.8 million Xboxes during the quarter, but didn't indicate how many were freebies given out during its back-to-school PC promotion."
This compares to 2.8 million 360s sold in the same period last year.
That means that... 57.6 million 360s have been sold worldwide since launch vs 51.8 million PS3s since it launch and 87.6 million Wiis - both the latter as of 30th June this year.
Never fear though because,"Xbox was the top-selling gaming console in the US for the ninth consecutive month. The company launched the Gears of War 3 game with over three million copies sold in the first week, and announced plans to roll out the next generation of TV entertainment on Xbox LIVE with nearly 40 content providers starting this holiday season."
In terms of pure money, revenues for the entire division were down 9% from $386 million to $352 million.
