Why can't people just play nicely? The whole debacle over a single word between Minecraft creators Mojang and industry big boys Bethesda is turning more and more into a playground scuffle every day. If you don't know the story, Mojang's new game is meant to be called
Scrolls. When it tried to trademark the name, Bethesda kicked up a fuss as you'd expect; they do own the
Elder Scrolls series, after all. The whole thing has degenerated into he-said-she-said over the past few weeks and now the two companies are going to court.
Cue a
post over on Kotaku that goes into detail on the trademark applied for by Mojang, painting the company less as a humble cap-doffing indie and more a canny, intelligent operation. Notch, the vociferous co-founder of Mojang, hits back saying that in his opinion Bethesda are bring the case to court thanks to more ulterior motives, not just a name.
On his blog, Notch posted the following: "Whatever reason they have for suing us, it’s not a fear of us having a trademark on the word
Scrolls, as we’ve offered to give that up." His commenting on a case before it's gone to court is a bit dodgy, it must be said, but in all honesty this whole thing is getting a bit odd. We may think we know what's going on behind the scenes until the actual court dates roll around but until then everything is mere speculation.
