According to an interview with Sony Computer Entertainment's president Hiroshi Kawano in the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu, the company had originally planned to release the Vita earlier than their current plans. Not much earlier, admittedly, but still sooner than the December 17th date for the Japanese unveiling. It would appear that panic set in at Sony after original ideas to push the console out on December 3rd were going to be too tricky to meet. With rumours of a lack of stock still around now, who knows how many (or how few) Vitas would have got into the hands of gamers if the console was indeed launched at the start of the month? We're thinking "not many".
Kawano attempted to smooth over any worries and believes that Sony will have 500,000 units ready to roll come the 17th and that they'll sell out very quickly – probably the most obvious thing ever said by anyone in management. Of course, there's still no news on when gamers outside of Japan will get their hands on Vita, but don't hold your breath if you're hoping for a pre-Christmas surprise from Sony. Never gonna happen.
