Sony announced a rather tantalising price point for the PlayStation Vita in the US, at $249.99. I remember the scene at the E3 conference. Cheers roared from the audience. But, if tentative prices from Amazon and GAME are any indication, UK gamers could be in for a world of wallet pain.Said retailers are placing the Wi-Fi only version at a whopping £229.99. For the 3G version, you're going to have to splash out £279.99. The conversion on the Wi-Fi only price comes back to $370. Even adding VAT into the equation, it's a hell of a price hike.
Nintendo's 3DS launched in the UK in March with a recommended price point of £230. Although initial hardware sales were strong, a lack of interest from cash-strapped consumers (and those already happy with a DSi) forced retailers to reduce it or offer bundles. At present, the 3DS can be purchased for £180.
Could Sony's PlayStation Vita suffer the same fate if consumers balk at the price? Would gamers be more interested, given the practical non-existence of the PSP in the country? Let us know your thoughts in the forum below.
