So, off SPOnG went to the Nintendo third-party round table in order to see what its partners were making of the Wii U mainly. Here's what I discovered.
Nintendo are making a partnership with Ubisoft on the development of games on the WiiU. The background behind this relationship has been based on the developer's long time support for Nintendo platforms in the past.
Ubisoft has taken the view that the new method of control the Wii U boasts is a significant step towards a platform that will be for everyone. Five games are being developed for the system by Ubisoft. Titles include Raving Rabbids, Assassin's Creed, Killer Freaks and Ghost Recon Online.
Each title is discussed by the development teams. First up, Ghost Recon Online:
Ghost Recon Online uses the Wii U's touch pad extensively. It uses the screen as a tactical interface that can be used to inform other players the location of enemies and advise way points. This system has been dubbed the Crosscom 2.0 system. The system consists of three parts. First there is a tactical map explained above, then we have the drone control that can log targets. Finally there is a guided missile control that turns the tablet into a direct control system.
The Wi iU has significantly impacted the way in which players interface with games. The weapon customisation uses the ability to move content from the controller screen to the TV display.
A multiplayer version of the game was demonstrated, with the controller screen shown to demonstrate how it interacts with the tv screen. Typically the tactical view is shown and scrolling as the player moves within the map.
Another element of the Wi iU is the fact that it can be used while the main TV screen is off. This creates an 'always on' service that allows players to track stats of other players even while they are not playing.
Next game under the spot light is Killer Freaks from Outer Space. And no, that is not a working title. It's an FPS title that has a multiplayer competitive mode.
The game demo is set in London that has been invaded by little green flesh eating creatures. It seeks to demonstrate the how the controller uses the gyro to aim the player's gun. It does seem to require the player to stand up and rotate on the spot as if they are looking within a sphere.
Another use is the Real Time Director. This allows one player to act as a Game Master by adding monsters in real time using the controller from the Wii U. The view of the map is an overhead one.
Finally on titles we have Assassin's Creed. The Wii U has a multicore architecture and large memory. This apparently has aided the development of the game on the new console. With regards to the controller, the screen will be used as a method to show database information and alternate views.
A very interesting talk that goes a little way in showing what we can expect to see from the Wii U.
