Square Enix is preparing to launch a new MMO game some time this fiscal year, according to comments made by CEO Yoichi Wada during the company's earnings briefing. The 13 May financial meeting,
published today on the publisher's IR page, reveals that Square Enix has ambitions to maintain two to three large scale MMO games at the same time. Hopefully it has a better business plan than it currently does with PC flop
Final Fantasy XIV.
One of the
company's targets for the coming year is the "ability to continue to win acceptance of our products and services, which are
offered in highly competitive markets characterized by the continuous introduction of new products and services, rapid developments in technology, and subjective and changing consumer preferences."
In English? Do a better job than it currently has been doing in the MMO space.
Square Enix also aims to crack out a number of fresh IP over the coming year or two, with a chart that details future plans for its internal studios. The big Tokyo development team, which currently looks after
Final Fantasy,
Dragon Quest and
Kingdom Hearts, has been tasked with creating two new IPs. Eidos Montreal (
Tomb Raider), IO Interactive (
Hitman) and Wimbledon studios will be under pressure to create one original IP each.
Wada also stated in the briefing that there is light at the end of the troublesome
Final Fantasy XIV tunnel, and that the publisher will soon be at a stage where they can provide a quality service in exchange for your hard-earned.
