Dead Island: No Dead Kids in Game

It's just won't sell

Dead Island: No Dead Kids in Game
There won't be any 'taboo-breaking' dead or zombie children in Dead Island when the game comes out. Producer Sebastian Reichert has pointed that, aside from issues with ratings board ESRB, "We can happily say the game is brutal enough. We don't need kids in there."

The slow motion dead child in the trailer, however, well if you didn't get the point or thought it was somewhat offensively exploitative, let Reichert explain as he did to Eurogamer.

"Killing people in general is a taboo. So as soon as you go to the zombie topic, you have to face the fact you will kill people, else it won't work. So yes, we also have a kid in there. But I don't see we exploited this in any way, like we just splattered her over the ground or some weird s**t like that."

Not convinced? "I'm feeling sad for the people who don't see that in this trailer are also 25 regular people dead. They're running around and trying to eat your brains, but they're still dead."

See? Easy. Despite the fact that you might have though that 25 regular dead people would have had enough emotional impact - according to Reichert's strange logic - it's because it wasn't about emotion.

Reichert points out to CVG that, "We won't be a dialogue-based game that revolves around emotion. We will have strong elements from examples like Borderlands that will keep you playing."

Not dialogue then, not like, for example, Heavy Rain?

"So, when we heard the Heavy Rain comparison we were like, 'Whoa!'"

"We've had problems declaring Heavy Rain as a 'game' - it plays like a movie. I've had more complex DVD menus."

Hilarious! Our Svend went to check out Dead Island, and we'll be hearing from here later.
