Nintendo's Iwata Chimes In on Sony's NGP
News has splashed over the internet regarding Sony's upcoming offering to the handheld market, the NGP. You've probably noticed. Gamers know its coming and so does Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata. Want to know what he thinks of the competition? Yeah, we thought so.

Nintendo's quarterly earnings briefing was held in Tokyo earlier today. World news outlet Bloomberg reported that Iwata said of Sony's latest handheld that "They're trying to appeal to customers from a different direction than us. The customers will decide which is correct."

Iwata was also quizzed as to what measures Nintendo will be taking against Sony's NGP upon release. He replied "Nintendo is not the kind of company that thinks about how we oppose other company's product."

The company CEO added that preorders for the portable, due for release on February 26th, are going well and briefly mentioned the company's firmware plans for the 3DS. A system firmware update towards the end of May will enhance the device's wireless functionality together with allowing DS owners to transfer their internal software to the 3DS.

Iwata was posed a final question, asking if titles from the gaming giant will appear on non-Nintendo hardware, a la PlayStation Suite. He replied "So long as I am CEO, it definitely will not happen."

Surprised to read Iwata's responses on Sony's NGP? And what of his reply to original titles on non-Nintendo hardware? Any thoughts, feel free to post them in the Comments section below.

It's the sensible approach. Spend less time worrying about how to catch up/compete with the other players in your market and focus on what you believe will appeal to the greater customer base.

Sony and its developers have a lot to learn about mobile gaming. The last thing I want to do is spend my gaming on the move waiting for levels to load. The DS is instant fix whereas even my PSP go features long loading pauses. Look at the iphone gaming success. In this market, superior hardware counts for nothing.
