Government Cuts Could Screw Video Games Network
In stunning disregard for the local games industry, it appears that development agency Screen Yorkshire is in talks to cut financial support for industry network Game Republic.

As the organisation's sole funding arm, Screen Yorkshire announced that it has had to undertake a structural review after being hammered by the coalition government's public spending cuts. "Screen Yorkshire provides the sole funds for Game Republic, so we’ll have to consider its future as well as everything else," a spokesperson said.

Game Republic has helped fund local gaming projects in the past (including Revolution Software's Broken Sword iOS app) as well as organising network events and the Eurogamer Expo in Leeds. Studios in its remit include Rockstar Leeds, Sumo Digital and Team17.

But the industry network group has hopes for future investment in the games studios it has helped support. Sector manager Jamie Sefton told Develop that there are "encouraging signs" that the
organisation can continue with private funding.

Best of luck to Game Republic and its future. It's one hell of an anchor for the local industry.
