PSP2 to be as Powerful as PS3
Details have emerged regarding the successor to the PSP with the PSP2 - aside from release date, there is now some potentially mind-blowing news about its capabilities.

According to MCV, "Sony has told licensees the device, ‘is as powerful as the PlayStation 3’".

The electronics manufacturer is due to offer its challenger to the 3DS in the period of good cheer, suggesting that they are not out of the portable console race just yet. The first official announcement for the device is due to be given on January 27th.

PSP2 will carry an HD screen and twin-stick controls. A list of games and launch details have already been sent out to publishers, endeavouring to differentiate itself from the Apple and Android set of mobile phones. It will also maintain a format that will keep retail connected to the portable's life cycle through physical software sales.

Sony is touting the portable device to be as powerful as its current console, the Playstation 3.
The announcement is rumoured to be hot on the heels of the Nintendo 3DS, due to be launched around Easter time.

Extra reveals of the handheld and its titles will be shown at this year's GDC and E3. Excited at the announcement of the PSP2?

Ok, I can see it being comparable graphics but i very much doubt it is as powerful as a PS3, there is no way it can output Something like Uncharted 2 in 1080p!, this is all marketing bollox, I imagine it is `comparable` but not actually as powerful, that would be like plugging your PS3 into a 1300mah battery it would last about 2 mins.

For the record, PSP2 is *not* as powerful as a PS3 by a long way.

It may be possible to rework some PS3 games to run on the PSP2 but they will require a ton of optimisation to account for the differences in the way the hardware works and the assets are also likely to be "optimised" to account for the lower power.

I suspect what Sony mean by their statement is "expect some PS3 titles to appear on PSP2".

do handheld console require HD x 2 super realistic GFX? Come on really.

What hand held needs is a super long battery life.
Be small enough to fit into your pockets
and the best games.

Look at it this way... Sony's playstation 3 and PSP may well of picked up on sales now (due to the fact that the Playstation brand is still strong today) but they lost alot of potential profit with both systems and that is due to the PRICE and COST OF PRODUCTION! Proving that even the Playstation brand and boasting all the power that those systems have.. was not enough to win the fans over due to the price and sony lost out.

So my point is this... How are they going to put a handheld device on the market that is nearly as powerful as the PS3 and sporting HD for an affordable price for their potential customer's when the PSP when first released was not? Both sony products had to go through price cuts and retail offers before sales began to pick up.

This post is to hopefully help others learn that Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft will bend the truth anyway possible to get your money no matter what because thats what companies do.. so please... when a company like this makes a gigantic claim.. try not to get hyped..

Or if you want the super short version.... what "its all lie's!" said at the bottom of his post only Sony were aware of this instead of it being a "inocent mistake"

Has sony completely missed the point over the last few years? The big winners didn't clean up because of their graphic or processing powerhouses. The were pretty pitiful on that front, but beat out through disrupting the norm - DS and Wii brought new and easy to understand gameplay opportunities by removing controllers bristling with buttons and sticks and making gaming more social. iPhone won the hearts of millions (and the envy of more) by finally addressing the issue of crap UI and fiddly controls seen on all previous cell phones. Once the App Store was out there, the super cheap pricing model and super easy publishing model blew all other digital stores out of the water. Now Apple has now locked all those users into its "walled orchard" because they're invested in the apps
