All this legal jousting doesn't seem to have fazed Activision - the publisher has just announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops has passed $1 billion in revenue since its launch in November, according to "internal Activision estimates".That's not all. 600 million hours of play time have been logged online, and Microsoft has revealed that the average player logs on to
Black Ops more than once a day for periods of longer than an hour. Over half that time is spent playing online with fellow gamers.
CEO Bobby Kotick was dead chuffed. "In all of entertainment, only
Call of Duty and
Avatar [the movie] have ever achieved the billion dollar revenue milestone this quickly. This is a tribute to the global appeal of the
Call of Duty franchise, the exceptional talent at Treyarch and the hundreds of extraordinary people across our many
Call of Duty studios including Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer that work tirelessly on the franchise.
"Our ability to provide the most compelling, immersive entertainment experience, and enhance it with regular, recurring content that delivers hundreds of hours of audience value, has allowed
Call of Duty to continue to set sales and usage records."
The game made a record $650 million in its first five days on sale, beating last year's
Modern Warfare 2 by $100 million. If it continues this momentum, we'll be hearing a lot more about
Black Ops throughout 2011.
