EA's Riccitiello: Nintendo Wii Needs Better Third-Party Support
The CEO of leading games developer and publisher EA, John Riccitiello, has spoken recently on his opinions regarding the Nintendo Wii and the measures the company could take to make successful gains in the upcoming financial year.

The executive proposed that the Wii could benefit from receiving another official price cut, allowing sales to pick up again for the console after a difficult year of performance in 2010. He said of the proposal: "I would say they did exceptionally well in ‘07 and ‘08, started tapering in ‘09 and ‘10, and... I think if they were to price down to $99, they would explode."

He added that if Nintendo were able to better promote third-party content and titles for the machine rather than solely first-party content; this together with the lower price point would allow the platform to experience a new life.

The CEO was also asked about his frustration with the lack of support for third-party software on Nintendo's machine. Riccitiello replied by comparing Nintendo with Apple, explaining that the latter was very third-party centred with the content that it offers and supports.

He further highlighted that with Nintendo, the memorable titles tended to be first-party produced ones, that it was "their own content" and that it is tough to name a dozen platform-defining landmark titles that were not Nintendo's own.

What do you think of Riccitiello's suggestion to lower the Wii to $99? And do you think Nintendo would actually do such a thing with their leading console in 2011? any thoughts, feel free to post them down below.

Shorter Riccitello: I want to keep shoveling out the same crappy games I do on other platforms, but those darn Wii owners aren't buying! What is an exec to do?? Oh, I know! Blame Nintendo! It works for everyone* else, so why not EA!

*This is only the mildest of exaggerations.

I'm sure if third parties made a Nintendo-like effert on the Wii they would benefit from it more than they do now.
