Confusion sets in at the PSP2 rumour mill, as IGN claims that "current iterations" of the fabled handheld "maintains the slider design of the PSPgo."This is coming from a source that has apparently had an extensive hands-on experience with the device. The problem comes when
vg247, the source of allegedly leaked images of the PSP2, stated almost as soon as it published its article that Sony has since changed the design of the new portable, to "a form like PSP-1000 in order to cool it down."
So either someone's telling porkies or they're running on outdated information. For what it's worth, the IGN report features dual analogue nubs with concave indentations, has a glass-like surface on the back to input touch commands ("such as analog thumbstick-type controls, taps [and] swipes...") and both rear- and front-facing cameras for photos and augmented reality games.
We're not sure - should the information be accurate at the time of the hands-on - if all of these features would remain if Sony did decide to change the PSP2's design. What's likely to stay the same is the technology under the hood - and IGN's source claims the new handheld has the power to rival early PS3 titles.
Sort of.
Apparently the processor is "just over half as powerful as the PS3... [allowing] it to sufficiently play games of comparable graphical quality due to the fact that it is rendering to a smaller, lower-resolution display." Bit of a long shot, but we'll run with it.
Some speculation to round off the piece includes the as-yet unproven possibility that Sony could allow players to hot-swap their PS3 games over to their PSP2 so they can continue playing on the move, before swapping back to the PS3 once they return home. That would certainly be a nice idea.
