Sony: Who Will Make Gaming's 'Avatar'?
Sony is still beating the drum of 3D technology, stating that there's a huge growth potential for the market after seeing the success of films such as James Cameron's Avatar.

Speaking at a Develop conference in Liverpool, Sony's Mick Hocking demonstrated several PlayStation 3 games that are already offering 3D capabilities and urged developers to adopt the technology.

"Games are going to be the killer content that will be the driving force that will help the 3D market grow," he said. "3D gaming is not just about depth – it’s a new creative medium. You have to experience high-quality 3D yourself to get the best from the medium."

With 3D adoption reportedly slumping since Sony's first capable TVs were launched, it begs the question whether developers will see any worth in catering to such a small audience. Hocking says that through games, that adoption rate will grow.

He proposed a challenge to studios around the world. "Avatar has gone down in movie history as the definitive 3-D film. Which one of us will create the definitive 3-D gaming experience?"

Well, it looks like it'll be Sony at the moment, as nobody else seems like they're bothered. But maybe 3D will take off, and we will see what the tech truly has to offer. It just won't be this Christmas, clearly.
