Nintendo USA's president Reggie Fils-Aime has told the world about the life-to-date figures for all the platform holders' consoles in the USA. Guess who is winning? The loveable old president was talking at, sorry 'to', the great and the good at the recent BMO Capital Markets Annual Digital Entertainment Conference in New York, when he laid the following out based on the launch of the DS in 2004 (we'll put them in USA launch order)
Nintendo DS - 2004 launch - sold 43.1 million units.
Sony PSP - launch 2005 - sold 17.7 million.
Microsoft Xbox 360 - launch 2005 - sold 21.9 million
Nintendo Wii - launch 2006 - sold 30.4 million.
Sony PS3 - launch 2006 - sold 13.5 million.
Reggie's unlikely to have picked these out of the air and will probably have used actual hard data.
