Microsoft: Kinect Will Be "Biggest Platform Launch in History"

Won't be the next 32X, either.

Microsoft: Kinect Will Be "Biggest Platform Launch in History"
You have to admire** the lengths of which Microsoft is pushing its Kinect motion-sensing device - Studios chief Phil Spencer has said it will be "the biggest platform launch in the history of the industry."

Speaking in a recent interview, Spencer also batted away suggestions that the peripheral could be the next Sega 32X, stating that Kinect is "a long term commitment from us, not an accessory.

"This is us adding to our platform, just the way we added live to the platform, and now it's pervasive across everything we do, Kinect we expect to show up in exactly the same way. It will not be the 32X."

When asked what Microsoft's sales expectations are for Kinect, Spencer replied, "I know [Don Mattrick] was quoted saying a holiday target of over 3 million. I think about it in a bigger way than that. Not that Don's wrong; that's the number that he stated, but a lot has to happen in order for us to have success.

"Our content partners have to ship great games, our retail partners have to be there with us, our marketing has to be there in a very impactful way. We are investing in this like we've never invested in a platform launch. This is, for us, the biggest platform launch in the history of the industry. "

Certainly, Microsoft has confidence. What do you think, readers?

** No, you don't

In all honesty while being extremely vaque due to a NDA agreement... This will be the case to a somewhat extent. There are some linguring issues that must be addressed otherwise this target is somewhat far reaching.

I do agree the impact it will produce will alter the market but it still misses key functions such as feedback in the physical sense. The PS Move has this in rumble which is enougth for interaction and gaming. The absence of any button input also resorts in being at the mercy of the detection software and latency(which varies).
A brilliant example is Time Crisis Razing Storm. With PS Move it is a natural point and click system but due to the nature of the Kinect I cannot see this being possible in a natural sense.

I must stop due to NDA as everything ive mentioned is common knowledge and everything i need to say to validate my response is not :(

You have to give MS credit, they didnt just do a 'Wii HD', they have tried to do something different and clever.
lets hope they pull it off

At the price they're asking for it? "Snowball's chance in hell" springs to mind. I'm not spending over a hundred quid on a fancy webcam and I don't expect many other people to, either... no matter how much effort is put into the launch.

It's "different", which does deserve credit - yet it's "different" in the same way that Move and Wii are "different". Is that really different enough? ;)

Also, I wouldn't say its "too expensive", it's just that, given its price, I would like to try it out before spending that much.

@Andy_P

If said snowball is contained correctly then it could survive very well in hell, hence marketing and software will determine this snowballs fate. and lets correct one thing its slightly more than a fancy webcam, im not trying to defend MS here as I personally am feeling Move to be the better tech of the two, but this will decide how MS will go with the next XBOX.

That is a brilliant way to explain it. Anything if hyped enough can make a profit. The problem however occurs when the returns outweigh the sales.
Move in my opinion caters to the market more appealingly than the Kinect itself. Again I’m highly limited to responding... my main issue is as mentioned above and that is 'Two way feedback' which is something I believe heavily in. The Kinect in use just feels free floaty. Without any definite restriction on how each action can be perceived there is a lot of confusion and interpretation left to the consumer. A button on the other hand is simply that, a definite and absolute interaction with a guaranteed response, combined with the feedback of visual/audio and physical threw rumble the PS Move just threw design is one step ahead.

I wish Microsoft all the luck with this as i think such hardware is going to be the basis of augmented reality development and it is this style of cheap mass produced product that gets the ball rolling. for example Jason on the gadget show proposed putting the camera on your head so it watched your hands move.
I think it will fall on it arse if there is any problem with detection, in particular how it copes with all the different living room layouts. how does it play when there is a group of people standing behind you watching for example. or your wearing the same colour clothes as the walls in your room.

Sadly that will not work due to each console i linked to hardware threw ID, Each profile is linked to Console with Kinect ID in order to allow activation of preview software and THEN I am sure they can track with IP/ISP data as they proved with earlier leaks. It does suck hard not being able to talk as im a heavy gamer at heart and a proffesional in games design *Though jobless due to constant UK redundancies* and im doing a self project website which I cannot even mention the Kinect on :'(
Hopefully Eurogamer will give me enougth unique material to start with a bang :D

Wait, so you're both unemployed AND under NDA?

I'm getting Move tomorrow, even though there isn't too much software out there yet. Why? Because for me, it is cheap. I already have a PS Eye, and I just need to buy a single remote. If I like it, I'll get another one, if not, it was just a few quid.

Kinect, on the other hand, is a completely different kettle of fish. The launch software, for want of a better word, is a little bit 'meh'. You can say the same about Move too, but Microsoft want me to pay a lot of money for their camera all in one go. Move allows me to buy it a piece at a time.

Unless Kinect does something really amazing, I will simply wait and see. Then, there'll be more software, the price will have come down, and the hardware will have been thoroughly reviewed. Sorry MS, no day one, week one, or possible month one purchase from me.

@Mr_Smith The EyeToy on steroids is not "different" or "clever"--it's taking a proven technology and iterating on it., something that Sony themselves cast off as unwise.

Chortles. If they do a pack in where you get an excercise game, and a free bag of pork scratchings, and maybe a pork pie too, and say '10 minutes on this will burn that pork pie off' then i'd be really tempted, take it home, and munch those Mr Prokies guilt free, before playing Halo online.
