Sony's latest PlayStation 3 firmware update has been revealed to contain data that disables "unauthorised" and "unlicensed" third party USB devices. Unfortunately, it appears that some legitimate peripherals have been locked out in the process.Users on the
US PlayStation forums are writing of various third-party devices that no longer work on their consoles. Such products include, allegedly, a number of MadKatz controllers and a PS2-to-PS3 controller adapter.
Just the other day SCEA posted a
consumer notice on its website, reporting the existence of "counterfeit" PS3 controllers. "It is possible that some counterfeit product may ignite or explode, resulting in injury or damage to the user, your PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, or other property," reads the statement, which doubles as an advance explanation as to why it has locked various peripherals out with the new firmware.
The disabling of unauthorised devices follows the creation and sale of the
PSJailbreak, a USB stick that allows users to play backed up games and files.
