Phantasy Star Online is to get a true sequel, ten years after the release of the Dreamcast original. Sega confirmed rumours of a PSO2 during its Tokyo Game Show keynote last night - it will be hitting the PC in 2011.The announcement of a sequel to the 2001 online RPG is significant - the original
Phantasy Star Online is revered by online RPG fans as the best in the series. In 2006, Sega released
Phantasy Star Universe, a spiritual sequel on the Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 2, but reception was mixed due to the changes to core gameplay mechanics.
Phantasy Star Online was popular enough to warrant a
Version II release on the Dreamcast a year later (which was ported to the Xbox and Gamecube in 2003) and a PC edition titled
Blue Burst in 2004. No mention was made of a console version of PSO2, neither was the game's pricing structure for online play.
The logo you see is the only image of the game released so far - no doubt it will be somewhere on show at the TGS arena for industry eyes to see. Keep 'em peeled for more details. For now, enjoy this video recorded from Sega's UStream feed.
