Hardware Add-On Could Bring PS3 Backwards Compatibility
Details have surfaced of a patent registered by Sony for a "removable adaptor" that can be connected to a "next generation games machine" with the codenames for both devices, "200" and "300", possibly hinting at an external PS2 backwards compatible adaptor for the PS3.

Translations of the Japanese text in the original patent describe how the adaptor would work and explain that the "200" adaptor would be like a revised version of prior hardware and a hub would act as the connector for both devices and an optional router.

Although reports are keen to highlight that this is only a patent application at this stage it would be interesting to see if Sony makes this more concrete and would answer many PS3 fans prayers by charging them for the means to play PS2 games as well, albeit in an external hard drive attachment fashion.

...or, for £30 go buy a PS2? Like right now? And while you are there pick up some 2d fighters like capcom vs snk for under a fiver and play! pfft why buy a ps3 to play ps2 games? move forward not backwards, I love my PS2 and play it all the time, but if backward compatibility is going to drag down the 'ps4' then forget it. Look at the Dsi, see how much better it is than a DSlite, they had to drop the gba cart to fit in all the extra bits. If I want to play GBA games, Ill play them on my GBPocket or SP.

FORWARD MARCH SONY!

A patent doesn't mean a real product. Some patents are just to protect from other companies creating the same product.

@Page

It sounds more like a way of developing a new Playstation, ie PS4 and allowing backwards compatibility of PS3 games without having to keep that in mind ta the design stage, I dont think this is intended for PS3 to allow PS2 compatibility. so in effect its an optional extra to make sure he PS4 wont be `dragged down` also more than likely to get rid of the negative feedback the PS2 suffered after the 60GB was discontinued, im not saying this will happen just it looks apparent.

@haritori

I guess Im just a bit anti backward compatibility. It sort of looses its focus if they need to even think about it. If its just an add on then ok, but if it means restricting the new consoles just to play Tomb Raider, then I am seriously against it! Hope you are right.

The fact that the industry seems to want to expunge its history - or at least condemn it to the world of "too bloody hard to use" - is the real shame.

As someone who has played videogames since the 1980s (Kevin Toms Football Manager anyone?) it galls me that, after all we've learned from TV shows and movies being lost, the games industry insists on denying itself the respect that its own history would provide. Instead it's heading off into the absurd "video games as art" dead end.

Then again, makes it far easier to 're-release' and 're-imagine' and 're-boot' and... re-sell old games doesn't it.

@Tim Smith Ah Kevin Toms, theres a blast from the past! Yup I have played games since the late 70's and still do every day, its up to us to keep and play these games not the games industry. Pilot Wings on my SNES is still as hard today as it was when I bought it you know! I like to see new games, new hardware and new ideas. Thats not to say I dont love the classics, thats why I never trade stuff in...

@Page Sometimes people still love the old games. I miss playing my Kingdom Hearts but my PS2 broke and I'm not buying a new one. I really wish the PS3 would get backwards compatibility, all of the Kingdom Heart games that are coming out makes me want to play them all in order.

There have only been four home consoles that had any form of backwards compatibility - the PS2, PS3, 360 and Wii.

How on earth did we survive before the year 2000?

I for one would love the backward compatability again. I have a lot of ps2 games that my son is now starting to play.on a ps2 but would love to be able to play it on my ps3 again.
