Sony is apparently preparing a digital media service to rival Apple's iTunes, to be announced later today at the IFA technology show in Berlin. The news comes from a report in the
Financial Times, which states that the company is looking to replace its now-defunct Connect music service. The service will see users pay a subscription for music and video content, and is set to launch on the PlayStation 3 and PSP in 2011 before moving on to other Sony platforms.
Any such announcement would most likely involve the PlayStation Network and its large user base, particularly as Sony has a tendency to use the gaming platform to help nurture new media formats. Just recently reports told of a
refocusing of Crackle, Sony's browser video service, to headline a renewed digital entertainment package for PSN users.
The IFA show begins later today. It may be no coincidence that today is also the day Apple hosts a press conference focusing on its iTunes media store. Should the FT report be correct, we may have a rather interesting evening to look forward to.
