Xbox 360 Controller Redesign Confirmed - Pics and Video

D-pad gets overhaul

Posted by Staff
Microsoft has confirmed reports that a new design is in the works for the Xbox 360 controller. The design enables the cross on the D-pad to be raised by giving it a twist.

While the pad will be out on November 9th in the States, it's looking like February before we get it over here.

Major Nelson tells us, "We’ve just made the Xbox 360 Wireless controller even better with a brand new version that includes a transforming D-pad. The engineers have come up with an ingenious solution with a d-pad that can go from a plus to a disc with the twist of the wrist."

The pad also features grey face buttons and concave analogue sticks.

The Major goes on to note, "The controller will only be available with the new Play & Charge Kit that will launch on November 9th for US $64.99." Get that? Only with the new Play & Charge Kit. He says that about a hundred times.

wow. a rotating dpad with a helix on the hub to retract the 'circle'
wonder how long before the it gets worn and starts rotating when youre playing.

@thinic couldnt agree more! the majority of people treat their controllers like s**t, myself included, and often just a simply button goes..

also why lose the coloured buttons?? makes no sense!

I don't get the gap, are controllers region locked on 360 or somat?

anyway I don't play my 360 enough to warrant getting one, though I do hate the D-Pad on the current ones, I don't get why they didn't just copy the PS D-Pad.

For $64.99 thats not much of a difference, considering that the D-Pad isn't really all that bad when it's hardly used as much as the Analogue Sticks. Now those are something they should consider about changing, as the rubber seems to wear down till it's all smooth with little grip left on it, especially when you look at the PS3's analogue sticks which are pretty nice. And here's hoping the new play and charge kit lasts a bit longer than the current ones, or at least the cable.

@Anon
Oops, missed the part about the Analogue sticks, they do seem nicer than the current ones :D

Looks interesting - I much prefer the 'plus' design and like how the engineers have been able to cater to both types. But, the annoyances everyone had with the D-pad was that it was too inaccurate. Like, the problem's underneath the D-pad, not the D-pad itself.

I'll give it a look, but if playing with the Plus feels as janky as playing with the D-pad on the current controllers, they'll have missed the point entirely.

Yeah, the major issue from the very beginning has been the d-pad, I thought. How does changing its surface affect the button action underneath?

There's actually one single thing I like about the current XBox controller - the (proper) triggers. Other than that, it's always just been a case of putting up with what there is.
