Quantic Dream's David Cage has called the games industry 'conservative' and said that all games are basically the same, as well a comparing cutscenes to the 'plot' scenes in porn movies at the opening of GDC today. The man behind the sleuthing PS3 exclusive
Heavy Rain pointed out to press and games developers that, "Today we are a very conservative industry. Few take risks. The game industry is technologically innovative, but not conceptually innovative. But I think the market is ready for new paradigms. I think the industry is ready for new ideas."
The question is, based on sales of
Heavy Rain - 1.5million since launch in February this year - is the buying public ready?
Cage went onto
comment that cutscenes serve the same purpose as the 'plot' scenes in porn movies, "They both do the same thing, they prepare you for the action, which is all you really want," he told the appreciative crowd.
He also took aim at game classifications, creating the point that while you could see women's breasts on television in prime-time, having the same sight in games lead to an 18 rating, "depending of course on how big the tits are."
His solution is that the industry needs to take the opportunity to "create interactive entertainment for older people." This would take gaming away from "what you see and what you destroy," and into deeper emotional territory where you don't "always do the same things whether you drive or shoot or jump on platforms." This would enable gaming to move away from paradigms that have existed for 25 years.
So, the industry is conservative but it likes to use porn movie conventions...
