Valve: Sorry We Banned You Modern Warfare 2 Players

What's with this making a mistake and admitting to it and fixing it?

Valve: Sorry We Banned You Modern Warfare 2 Players
Valve has apologised for banning Steam-driven Modern Warfare 2 players. Just like that. An apology and a fix and a gift.

Yes, it appears that Valve's Gabe Newell has not been to 'PR and Marketing Spin 101' with its mantra, 'Never Apologise. Never Explain".

Following a fubar in which Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 players were banned, Gabe issued the following apology on the Steam Forum.

"Recently, your Steam account was erroneously banned from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

"This was our mistake, and I apologize for any frustration or angst it may have caused you."

What? This kind of open admission of error could bring the entire modern video gaming industry into chaos!

Gabe continued, "The problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version. This was caused by a combination of conditions occurring while Steam was updating the disk image of a game. This wasn't a game-specific mistake. Steam allows us to manage and reverse these erroneous bans (about 12,000 erroneous bans over two weeks)."

What? giving the actual reason in a way that doesn't insult the intelligence? There are spin doctors actually in agony right now.

"We have reversed the ban, restoring your access to the game," says Gabe. "In addition, we have given you a free copy of Left 4 Dead 2 to give as a gift on Steam, plus a free copy for yourself if you didn't already own the game."

This is obviously simple customer-facing, decent anarchism on the part of Steam!

Find out how to get your freebie over at Steam. We applaud you.
