We were not disappointed. The Nintendo dignitaries were quite obviously pleased to show off the Pokemon Company’s latest creation, the Pokemon Mini.

It is effectively a miniature Game Boy that takes tiny Pokemon-based game cartridges. It has a shoulder button and comes impressively equipped with an infrared communication port and built in rumble facility. Not bad, eh?

We were treated to a hands-on trial of the new machine by the very hospitable Mr Iwata of Nintendo Japan.

The first thing that strikes you about the unit is its size. It is tiny, and the game cartridges are even smaller, about the size of a postage stamp, only a bit fatter.

The game on show was a Pikachu-themed racing game and although most of the text was in Japanese, we were able to get to the quite complex looking trading and battling screens.

The new hardware will not just be used for trading and battling Pokemon in the classical sense. It is understood that there will be an entirely new Pokemon gaming system put into place that will see items and a whole host of other new features traded and fought over.

Nintendo could not confirm the connectivity possibilities between the Pokemon Mini and the Game Boy version of Pokemon.
