PS3 To Offer HBO TV Programmes
Sony has signed an agreement with Time Warner that will see its HBO television programs offered through a service on the PlayStation 3. The deal follows similar arrangements with Netflix, Mubi, and Major League Baseball to offer video on the console.

CEO of SCEA, Jack Tretton, said that "HBO is a high-profile content provider, and a real premium service, so we think this really reinforces that the PlayStation is more than just a video-game console now. It gives consumers that big-screen, HD experience in the home on a device other than cable and satellite, and that's becoming the norm now as opposed to the exception."

The executive also suggested that TV networks are bound by some sort of metaphorical shackles owned by cable and satellite companies. No more, apparently - now they can "play wherever the consumers play."

Eleven HBO series will be made available, with users paying a premium to download each episode. Big Love, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Entourage are among the shows planned for the service. Episodes will be made available at the same time as their DVD counterparts. There's potential for popular shows to sell for $2.99 USD per episode, while most TV dramas will be going for 99 cents.

The two companies declined to detail the specific business arrangements, although it does involve a revenue split.
