The Electronics Entertainment Expo is less than a month away and as you would expect, the rumour mill is churning at a vicious pace regarding what Sony will show. Top of the list is a 'premium' PSN service and a revamped Xross Media Bar (XMB), with whispers of a PSP2 announcement at a later trade event.VG247, citing a "
highly-placed source," reports that Sony will reveal plans for an optional paid-for scheme that will see users reap a bunch of benefit for "less than £50 a year." An example of one of these bonuses will be one free PSN game a month, but it was said that nothing in the package that will "gimp regular PSN users." Apparently, Sony is not saving cross-game voice chat for the premium service.
Talk of a redesigned XMB kicked off when CheapAssGamer webmaster, CheapyD, mentioned it on a
recent podcast episode. In fact, the man said that he "knows" that Sony will show off a revamped design at E3, although didn't delve into what exact changes would be made. The quote;
"I’ve heard that the Sony PS3 is getting a completely redesigned XrossMediaBar. Like totally new, not just like new columns and stuff like – totally redone."
Curious. Even curiouser is alleged developer talk of a next-generation PlayStation Portable, also reported by various unnamed sources at
VG247.
The new device will apparently have a touch screen, front and backward-facing cameras, traditional face buttons, 3G capability and a four-core Cell processor. Developers and publishers are said to have had NDAs in place for "many months," and that a 2011 release will mean that an announcement on the product will be held off until Gamescom or the Tokyo Game Show this year.
Rumours eh? What's it all about? Good for discussion though - and you know where to direct that! Hint: look down.
