Sony Aims at 15 Milllion PS3 Sales in 2010
Sony has revealed that it has hit its sales target of 13 million PlayStation 3 consoles during the 2009 fiscal year. The number comes as the company publishes its annual financial figures for the year ending 31st March 2010, and is a jump from the 10.1 million units sold in the previous year.

The total worldwide number of PS3s sold is now approximately 35.7 million since its 2006 launch. Sony predicts a further 15 million units sold in the 2010 fiscal year (that ends 31st March 2011) based on the momentum gained with the success of the launch of the 'slim' model. This will take lifetime sales to 50.7 million units by next April, if proven accurate.

That seems to be where the good news ends, because despite an increase in business over the Q4 period, total annual sales in the Game section of the Networked Products & Services department has decreased year-on-year. Sony places the blame on "unfavourable foreign currency exchange rates" and a slump in sales of both PlayStation Portable hardware and PlayStation 2 software.

PSP sales totalled around 9.9 million units for the 2009 fiscal year - not quite hitting the 10 million unit forecast - compared to approximately 14.1 million the year before. The PS2 actually beat its predicted 7 million sales target with roughly 7.3 million units sold compared to the previous year's 7.9 million.

While PlayStation 3 sales is predicted to increase for fiscal year 2010, Sony has dramatically reduced targets for the PSP and (although expectedly) PS2, with 8 million and 6 million units forecast respectively.
