Shocked? Call of Duty: Black Ops Single-Player 'Epic in Scope'
Seems like Treyarch's latest entry in the Call of Duty series, Black Ops, will be set in the thick of the Cold War era after all. In a recent interview, studio head Mark Lamia presented some new tricks and gameplay features to the war franchise.

As you would expect, Black Ops contains a single-player story mode that is "epic in scope... has meaning and character, and will be multi-threaded." Well, a single-player mode that isn't "Meh", that's ground rebreaking stuff.

There'll also be the obligatory two-four player co-op and multiplayer skirmishes to engage in as well. Characters in the game are being motion-captured using the same technology that James Cameron used in Avatar, for more realistic facial muscle movement.

The level showcased, titled "WMD," has the player guiding a group of four soldiers past a convoy of Russians in the Ural Mountains. Teammates can be directed by pointing to a specific direction and pressing a button. Alongside this basic team management mechanic, weapons can now house alternative ammo - an example was shown where a modified crossbow switched from a standard arrow tip to an explosive one. Boom.

Speaking of the crossbow actually, Lamia said that weapon in particular "is a great example of how elite black ops teams were permitted to equip themselves for whatever job they had at hand, which means that they could get a hold of anything and modify it any way they wanted to accomplish their missions objectives." It seems that extensive military research into the era has allowed them to explore some fascinating avenues.

"This setting, this period, was perfect for us because it allowed us this creativity," Lamia continues. "This period hasn't really been done in games and it spans a period of time. We are not getting into the exact period of time, because it is part of our story that we are going to reveal later, but it does cover a longer period during this era."

We now also know that Call of Duty: Black Ops is heading for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and PC, for a 9th November release. Wonderful.
