Sony has announced a deal with Major League Baseball in the USA to provide streamed matches to PlayStation 3 users over the internet. By the end of this week, PS3 users will be able to sign up for the MLB.tv service for an annual fee, at which point hundreds of baseball games will be available to watch instantly.A move like this is exciting for sports fans, but not altogether surprising; Sony has seen great success in North America with its console-exclusive
MLB: The Show simulation series, with
MLB 09 regularly hitting the top of the software sales chart in the country. This deal reinforces the interest the company has in maintaining its baseball-loving audience.
Senior VP for the PlayStation Network at SCEA, Peter Dille, took the opportunity to big up the PS3 to the
NY Times, “This is more than just a game console. This is a device that is redefining how content is being delivered to the living room."
The service will be a replication of the MLB's already existing service on the PC, which offers out-of-market baseball games for watching over the internet. Sony confirmed a revenue split from the deal, but declined to specify exactly what that was.
No news for the UK yet, but we're sure that the National Ladies Rounders League (Southern Division) are being seriously courted by SCEE.
