Sony's PlayStation 3 shortage problem continues, and couldn't be happening at a less convenient time as God of War III fever hits North America.

The LA Times reports that many retailers have completely sold out of the console, which is impacting the full effect of Sony's AAA title. Many gamers have held off buying a PlayStation 3 until Kratos' third outing, so this shortage is leaving a lot of potential customers out in the cold.

"It's not ideal, I won't kid you," SCEA President Jack Tretton told the paper. "But I firmly believe we'll get our hardware back in stock and keep selling God of War III for a long time."

The executive admitted that the shortages are a problem, but it won't kill Sony's chances at capitalising on the game too much. "We ultimately don't make investments on a product-by-product or month-by-month basis, but rather we invest in our platform. This game will pay off for us with the people who own a PlayStation 3 and the ones who will buy one in the future."

It may be true that God of War III has a potential long tail, but with the average gamers' attention span smaller than a gnat's fart - on top of the sheer number of quality titles hitting 2010 - Sony would be wise to ensure there are more than enough PS3s to meet demand in the coming weeks.
