Sony has been exploring the potential of providing non-game applications on the PlayStation 3 and PSP for some time, and now it seems like the company is ready to explore that avenue as it revealed it's lightweight "Skinny" development tool at GDC last week. The software development kit (SDK) is built to give content creators the ability to build non-game 'apps' for both the PSP and PS3, with a "one day turn-around" process that is said to easily port programs without any additional development required.
Skinny is apparently a perfect service to bring over strategy guides, game maps and cheats, training manuals, episodic videos and comics among other media.
Developers use a PC program to arrange text, images, audio and video into a flowchart-style format, which is then translated into an image file that can be processed to UMD or PlayStation Network. The only caveat is that all software must still be approved by Sony, but hopefully the process will be a bit quicker than your average.
