Sony will release its first 3D TVs in Japan on the 10th June and overseas shortly after, along with an update for PlayStation 3 users to take advantage of 3D software. The reason for acting in the Summer is so the company can get a lead on rival electronics company Samsung. Sony's first offering is to be a 46-inch model, selling at 350,000 yen (£2,605) and including two pairs of 3D glasses.
Reuters notes that the price is around 52 per cent more than its latest regular LCD with a similar size screen.
Hanwha Securities analyst, Alex Oh, said that Sony is a "formidable competitor" to Samsung because of its PlayStation business - he believes that gamers will be the first to adopt the 3D TV technology.
"In that sense, Sony, which is envisioning a comprehensive entertainment company, will take advantage of its game business, contents and movies," Oh said, "compared with Samsung and LG which remain focused on hardwares."
