Sony's quarterly sales report (see Page 4 of the linked PDF) is out, and the PlayStation 3 has done well indeed. 6.5 million PS3 consoles were sold worldwide between October and December 2009, an increase of two million units from the same period in 2008. The nearly 45% rise is thanks to the introduction of the 'PS3 Slim' in August, along with a price cut.The improved PS3 hardware numbers offset disappointing sales of the PSP and PlayStation 2. 4.2 million PSP handhelds were sold during the last quarter, compared to 5.1 million the year before, while the PS2 suffered a drop from 2.5 million units to 2.1 million.
Despite the overall sales slump across the PlayStation range, the “improvement in the cost of PS3 hardware” combined with its increased sales meant that profitability in the sector remains “relatively unchanged” from Q3 2008.
As consumer focus targets the PlayStation 3, could we see initiatives by Sony to finally introduce PS2 compatibility within the latest consoles? A lot of passionate gamers will be hoping so.
