It was only yesterday that George Hotz announced his exploit of the PlayStation 3, using a 'tricking' of the system to allow it to do whatever he wanted. Today, he has released it to the public, in the hope that it will “ignite the PS3 scene.”Users who download the ZIP file are being asked to post their findings on a development Wiki that archives information on various PlayStation exploits. The aim is to knock collective homebrew heads to come to a software hack in order to fully crack the machine.
“[The exploit] gives full memory space access and therefore ring 0 access from OtherOS,” writes Hotz. “This is known to work with version 2.4.2 only, but I imagine it works on all current version. Maybe later I'll write up how it works.”
Sony's only comment on the matter was to the BBC yesterday, stating that it was investigating the matter.
