According to The New York Times, "Microsoft has held in-depth talks with the Walt Disney Company about a programming deal with ESPN, according to people close to the talks, who requested anonymity because the talks were intended to be private", for Xbox Live.

The report includes interview material with Marc Whitten, the general manager of Xbox Live in which he states that getting as much content for Xbox Live is the company's current goal. "I don’t think there’s a real difference between a game and ‘Lost.’ Or a game and ‘American Idol.’ They’re all ways we spend our leisure time", he points out rather depressingly.

In terms of revenues, however, he could have a point. Gerardo Guzman, a director for Nielsen Games, points out that Xbox Live's 1 vs 100 quiz show, which his company is tracking for advertising, is "just the tip of the iceberg" and he "eventually hopes to generate TV-style ratings" via Xbox Live offerings.
